Week 15 Games December 6 - 8
Fearless fussing about diet restrictions
Still stuffed like a turkey, Old Fearless waddled to his desk and eased onto his chair.
"The feasting has just begun," he crowed. "With Thanksgiving coming so late this year, I'll be sampling goodies from now until Christmas, which is only three weeks away.
"I've already finished off three bags of chocolate covered pecans and five boxes of chocolate covered Ritz crackers."
We looked at him in disbelief. Surely he was kidding.
"Nope. Right now I'm halfway through a giant box of chocolate covered pretzels," he said. "Next up is a can of chocolate drizzled popcorn."
We thought we better put the brakes on his merry making.
"See here, chocolate chump, you better ease up on the party foods," we said. "At this pace, you'll gain 50 pounds by New Year's Day. We're putting you on a diet, nothing but bread and water for a week."
"I like the bread part," Fearless countered. "Besides, I only have a week left before I can escape from you blockheads and hibernate."
Sure enough, it doesn't seem possible, but this is the last week of Fearless for 2013. The final contest includes eight high school state championship games and seven college games outside the Southeastern Conference.
"I've suddenly lost my appetite," Fearless said as he studied the lineup. "I don't know anything about 99 percent of these teams. My finale is going to be a bummer."
Probably true, and last week wasn't anything to brag about. The old buzzard had an 11-5 record. He was 3-2 with the prep playoffs, 7-3 with the colleges and correct on the Titans' loss to the Colts.
Overall, he is 185-53 with the preps (.777), 107-36 with the colleges (.748) and 7-3 with the Titans.
Among 119 entries in Week 14 of the I Beat Fearless contest, 19 picked more winners than the seer. Michael Burr, who missed four, won the drawing for $100. The top picker with only one miss was Sammy Johnson of Bells.
Everyone automatically got the Henry County game correct because the wrong opponent was listed in the contest.
Hats off to Adamsville, Union City and Henry County for advancing to the state championships this week. All three are facing stiff competition, but they should be competitive and capable of winning.
"If the icy weather arrives as predicted, who knows how that will affect the games," Fearless said. "I just hope I can skate past a disaster."
